There is no popular vote, there is only the electoral college vote.

It isn't one election you have to win, it is fifty separate ones. She didn't, and could not, have won enough of those elections to win.

It shows why it is so important for leftist voters to stay in red states, because everyone who leaves makes it easier for right wingers to win more of those crucial elections. A hypermajority in one state just means one big win among a dozen losses.
