Unimportant things that you can't stop thinking about

Lots of Big Important Drama going on, meanwhile I read a published novel last week where one of the dramatically OP characters intoned that the enemy they were fighting had made their penultimate mistake. And I'm pretty sure the author meant ultimate? But I keep trying to figure out if there's a way that making their second to last mistake makes sense. It tasks me.

Hahaha that’s awesome in all the wrong ways! I try to just ignore those things but they’re so common that sometimes they do bug me. Weary and wary, amused and bemused, lightning and lightening…ugh. These are all different things, authors!

Maybe they were trying to imply it was the last mistake before their downfall? I know, doesn't quite work, but that makes sense.
