I agree with you. I don't like AUs that are outside of the existing world at all. I'm fine with canon divergences, but I'm generally as interested in the setting as I am in the characters, including the way the setting shapes those characters. Remove them from that setting, and my interest vanishes.

That said, while reading this, I had the thought, "oh no, did OP have a bad experience at the coffee shop?" I also worked at one, while I was in college, and I honestly had a wonderful time. We had so much fun! I'm very fond of those years, and can see how the environment could be turned into interesting fiction, even if I don't like the trope in fanfic.
