I like AUs, but I want them to add cool things, not remove them, and I also want the characters' personalities to remain intact.

I agree with you. I don't like AUs that are outside of the existing world at all. I'm fine with canon divergences, but I'm generally as interested in the setting as I am in the characters, including the way the setting shapes those characters. Remove them from that setting, and my interest vanishes.

That said, while reading this, I had the thought, "oh no, did OP have a bad experience at the coffee shop?" I also worked at one, while I was in college, and I honestly had a wonderful time. We had so much fun! I'm very fond of those years, and can see how the environment could be turned into interesting fiction, even if I don't like the trope in fanfic.

I love AUs.

But I do think a lot of AUs are boring - I think there are some AUs where they're being written because the writer, frankly, just didn't have any interesting or new ideas. AUs have to be executed well and there should be some reason that you're choosing the setting you're choosing. Especially for things like coffeeshop AUs that have been done a million times over. Sometimes it CAN be done well but it rarely is.

Is this a historical setting? Those get a lot of AUs from people who don’t know a lot about the relevant time and place.

I'm deeply mixed on AUs - every time I try to tell myself that I don't like *insert popular AU premise here*, I wind up finding a summary that actually sounds intriguing and it turns out to be my favorite fic in the fandom. It's ridiculous.

I'm sorry, I love college AUs in my fandom, mostly because it's RPF/Bandfic and the majority of these particular people never got to have a 'real' college experience ^^;;;;;

that being said, I'm not actually huge on fantastical AUs for that fandom in general, because... well. Not many people can keep their personalities intact due to needing to adjust them for fantasy settings. Makes them a whole different person imo and if I wanted fantasy I'd stick to a fandom that... actually has it. I don't think I can really explain my brain's logic LOL

Not every 'badly written' fic is unedited or a product of laziness. Some are young and/or new writers, still learning how to craft sentences or trying out writing for the first time because they had an idea they wanted to explore. Some are writing in a second or third language. Sometimes things are just missed, even after a second or third go-through.

Also? Fic isn't "published". It's shared. It's a labour of love shared with other people who love the same thing. It's not literature to be critiqued, and you're not a literary critic. You're a fan just like they are, and if you're not enjoying a thing on the "things for people to enjoy" website, just hit the back-button and go find something else to read.

I think it's less that, but at the time the marketing and creators really tried to push the idea that it was just fluffy, so as to make it even more dark and edgy and surprising when the reveal happened. I think it's also that Madoka kicked off a bit of a trend of grimdark edgy stories aimed at adults using magical girls.

I generally can’t stand him but am also so glad he cannot be tried again. I didn’t follow closely but someone I know mentioned that he wasn’t the only producer they were prosecuting? And also that they went after him first because he was on set and they had evidence that he had been informed about problems with the armorer.

If that’s true, I can see why they went after him. But it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to have a real gun on set and there’s no need to fire blanks. None.

The prosecution detracted from the issue of the need for industry wide change and served no positive purpose. Deaths like this have happened before and unfortunately they will happen again because of how they’re handled.

I just hate all Amazon and Netflix crap shows. And Disney. Shows get cancelled all the time. Not a huge loss but all the more reason not to get invested. 90-2015 is where it is.
