It’s possible to be both neurodivergent and raised in an abusive situation. It can make those traits already present in neurodivergent people more prominent. It’s not always either/or and canon explanations don’t have to be the only reason. That character can be shy and socially awkward because he was abused AND because he is ND.

Sure, but if the traits go away once the character is no longer in the abusive situation, then it's pretty clear that the character isn't ND.

Do they go away, or do they just get better examples to mirror? Because by your logic, I am not ND despite my very real autism diagnosis.
