That's why I am afraid to apply for jobs that require security clearance. I'm not dumb enough to use my real name or RL e-mail in fandom, and if you google me you won't find anything fandom-related. But I don't know how far they go with the background investigations. I'm sure a private detective would be able to track my IP or hack into my computer (I dunno if they'd do that; I hope I'm just paranoid) and find my fic.

Hence why I work as a cashier instead of trying to get a better paid office job. I do love fandom, but sometimes I wish I had never discovered it. :/

Sorry, but that's kind of silly. The people who do background checks and give out security clearance don't care about fandom or porn. They only want to know stuff like if you have a criminal history or have done drugs or have ever been involved in an attempt to violently overthrow the government.

I think you should totally go for a better job, if you can find one :)

At least apply. The chances that they'll actually hack your IP, somehow find your fics, care enough to read them, and then care enough to freak out are rather small. And then they just won't hire you, which, honestly, can happen for dozens of reasons anyway.

Unless you're working as a temp for U*N*C*L*E, you really don't need to worry. If you're unhappy with your work, don't talk yourself out of trying to find something better.
