I kinda worry that too, and like you I don't use my real name anywhere... but I just googled my username and nothing bad came up, just some old icon posts. Hooray!

(Anonymous) 2009-08-25 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I know exactly what you mean, OP. I don't use my real name online either, but I'm a cosplayer and I'm always terrified of allowing myself to act silly in front of the camera in case one of those pictures finds itself in the hands of a future employer or something. D|

(Anonymous) 2009-08-25 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I worry too. Not about a job but more about friends and family finding my blog etc.
I mean I f-lock my private stuff but they could get an account right?
I recently removed some storys I wrote at 11-13 years which mentioned my name and felt better after my name (real one) delivered no good search results via google.

I don't know about my nickname though. I just hope my friends and family in rl don't find it or only harmless stuff. I'm more worried about the employers stalking facebook to get information. Or the thing that is facebook in my country since my facebook is pretty normal. I don't have any drinking pictures or anything. It's more about groups I'm in etc.

[identity profile] sessile29.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Never, ever post a picture of your real face on the internet. Plausible deniability can take care of the rest.

And keep your real e-mail and fandom e-mail accounts separate.

I totally understand the feeling.
(I'm the kind of people who just delete their complete account when I doubt someone will find it D8 !)

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I feel that way sometimes. Most of the time, really, because I have learned the hard way that what you say on the 'net can come back to bite you.

I don't really worry (too much) about old fic or fanart being a problem, but I do worry that an opinion I expressed abrasively about a professional in the field I'm trying to break into (even if it was Liefeld) or something similar could come back to me. Though these days, I use my real name in most places, and try to own up to what I say. I just hate that it makes me cautious.

Oh, yes, and speaking of abrasive opinions: To everyone going "I don't get it?" or "What are you worried about exactly?"...
Are you serious? Have you seriously not heard of googling? And that employers often google prospective hires to see what kind of a person they really are? Whether or not it's relevant to the job at hand, if they find your host of Draco/Harry smut-fic, or obsessively silly roleplay, it may not reflect that well on you in their eyes. Fandom to most non-fans is not just a little bit creepy, especially once sex/shipping/fic/art start entering into the picture. It doesn't even have to be weird by fandom standards to freak a mundy. Really.

And if nothing else, if a simple search on you turns up your pr0ns or what have you, it doesn't say much for your discretion, which a lot of employers might take as a bad sign.

See, I'm one of those idiots who prefers to use their real (first) name online.

But I don't think there are any problems with it. Anything a possible future employer might find will be so old by that time that it will be passed off as "You were a weird kid back then".

But if you don't give your personal information to people is immpossible to someone to recognize you!, if you don't want to show your pictures or tell your hometown, etc. it's fine, no one can force you!.

Fandom is for fun, not for take more stress, I have enough of it in my life.

BTW, I will may sound stupid with this but, that's a Mirror Edge's screenshot? o.O or that's just my imagination...

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, try this, keep in mind that maybe whoever interviews you/checks you out could be someone involved in fandom too ;) Ya never know!

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have a common first and last name, plausible deniability can go a long ways if there isn't other identifying information. If you're unfortunately like me (nobody else on the planet with my first and last name) make sure you keep your fandom IDs completely separate, with separate emails. I keep a few professional looking things easy to find (my facebook is under my real name; this LJ is fairly easy to find and I post things publicly that are professional-appropriate) and use totally different SNs and emails for things that are more private/personal/fandomy.

[identity profile] zenfu.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
This secret made me google myself for kicks - only thing that came up of substance was a quote from when I was interviewed for the New York Times, which would just be cool considering that I'm Norwegian.

Then again, I don't use my real name anywhere online and don't even have a Facebook, so it'd be difficult for anyone to link me to my fandom stuff.

Somehow, I was under the assumption that most people didn't have their real name linked to their most fannish stuff. *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2009-08-25 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
What I've heard is a good strategy is to promote and cross-link the heck out of whatever you've done online that's boringly normal or will look good/neutral to employers, so that it shows up first in searches. If you haven't done anything boringly normal, go do some and get to linkspamming. Put it in a forum sig, if you frequent forums. Make sure this is the only profile or handle that's connected to your full name and/or a recognizable photo of you. As for the rest of it, f-lock or move to its own account/profile anything in which 1) you say anything negative about other people or industries, 2) you swear excessively, or 3) you show off any preferences, including political ones, that you think the average employer might find off-putting. If you have titles on the above types of f-locked posts, be sure they're vague from the get-go; some employers will check "last edited" dates, and some will know about IP tracking and archive.org. But I imagine that most of them don't have time for that, what with the flood of resumes they get. And if you actually remove pages or content from general view, I'm willing to bet most of them will take that as a sign you've recanted, or are willing to keep a lid on, whatever opinion the page expressed.

Do employers even look up your /screenname/?

[identity profile] uncreative-user.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I have the same fear, but not with my fandom (since I'm BARELY involved in any fandoms.), but with my fiction writing. Since it's dark and involves violence and abuse, people sometimes assume I'VE been through the things the characters are going through and either pity or resent me. It's kind of annoying. But, if an employer doesn't want to hire me because of a fiction story I wrote, I probably wouldn't want to work for them anyway...

(Anonymous) 2009-08-25 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
My real name is linked to fandom in a few places. IDGAF.

[identity profile] regendy.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I get where you're coming from, OP. I never use my real name anywhere... but according to Google, some girl on a Slytherin fansite has the exact same name as me, and I'm now worried employers will think it's me because my last name is so uncommon. XP

I see where you're coming from, OP.

Most people outside the internet haven't even heard of fandom. People do think it's weird*. And there's no point bitching about it and saying not to be ashamed or whatever cause for the most part, it is true. But I really don't think anyone would ever find out about you, OP, so calm down. But if it makes you feel better I second what someone else said about using a false email address for you fandom stuff.

But unless you plan on being a celeb or something in the public eye then I don't think someone irl finding out about you cussing out someone for denying your OTP or w/e it is you do on the net could mess with your life too much.

*When a guy at school (mature senior year~) found out I watched anime he borderline exiled me.

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm more worried about real life friends and family finding fandom activities.
If you're very careful and take precautions then don't worry so much about it. There are plenty of other tips suggested in this thread if you wish to be extra safe.
Be discreet, but don't deny yourself things you enjoy because of what employers may think. You probably won't come across one so determined to dig up dirt.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-26 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
That's why I am afraid to apply for jobs that require security clearance. I'm not dumb enough to use my real name or RL e-mail in fandom, and if you google me you won't find anything fandom-related. But I don't know how far they go with the background investigations. I'm sure a private detective would be able to track my IP or hack into my computer (I dunno if they'd do that; I hope I'm just paranoid) and find my fic.

Hence why I work as a cashier instead of trying to get a better paid office job. I do love fandom, but sometimes I wish I had never discovered it. :/
