As someone who is openly fannish at work (though not in detail—no one knows of my love of slash, for example, though they know about conventions/books/comics/posters/etc), I can say that a lot of places won't mind if you're a bit geeky. Just keep your pseudonym out of work-related activities, try not to let the two identities intersect (separate e-mails, etc), and don't let it interfere with your job and I doubt it'll ever come up. It's not so much what you do as your judgment in doing it openly versus privately. For example, most bosses don't care if you have a drink now and then, but if your judgment is poor enough that you post a drunken photo online under your real name, that is something they need to care about. Yes, there will always be someone who holds almost any vaguely fun non-professional activity against you, but it's not worth being paranoid if you take a few precautions. I recommend a monthly vanity google of your RL name, so you can stay abreast of what employers might find. Do it more often if you're actively job hunting or have reason to believe that something might be changing.

In general, it sucks that something pretty much harmless like writing 1000 word fluff fics is somehow less acceptable than hunting and killing small furry animals, but Muggles are strange that way. Until the geeky crowd finishes taking over the world, we just have to work around it.

(And for the record, I am very lucky in my current profession in that I work with very cool people, and I still don't hand out my personal e-mail address to coworkers even casually.)
