In the real world, "normal" fanfic can get you not hired and/or fired from a vast number of professional jobs. Hell, in the real world a photo on your facebook of you being drunk and PG-rated in your own home can get you not hired. Welcome to adulthood in the internet age.

[identity profile] daluci.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
What are we including under normal? I'm pretty sure if you wrote about... I don't know, Harry and co. having a conversation they're not going to hold it against you in a job interview.

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a sliding scale based on your profession. The most conservative fields/companies would absolutely hold it against you, while younger, less conservative places would be less likely to care unless there were something more adult. Fanfic in general is viewed by the rest of the world as weird, immature, unprofessional, etc, though, so it's unwise to go advertising it or posting it under your normal email if you have the kind of career that involves offices and suits and paying clients.

[identity profile] zealmightyspork.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
in the *~real world~*, people who are stupid enough to link their full name to the fic they wrote deserve not to get hired. in the *~real world~*, people who are stupid enough to have drunken photos on their facebook accessible to potential employers deserve not to get hired.

way to be a complete cunt about this, darling.

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Could you maybe avoid the blazing misogyny? It's offensive and makes you look crass. The OP's concern is entirely legitimate even if she's writing PG-13 Harry/Hermione fic, and for you to dismiss that in such a crude manner is ignoring a very real-world problem.

And if you think that posting your full legal name is the only way someone could find you, you really need to be more careful. It's not your real name that does it, it's your email, SNs, IPs, and other things that are easy to find. It doesn't take a PI, it just takes a hiring partner who cares and has 10 minutes; nearly anything you've ever posted to a forum or website can be found. And I'm also not talking about drunken-ass tomfoolery, I'm talking about normal party pictures on your facebook. This is the real world now when the people hiring didn't grow up with the internet and don't really understand.

[identity profile] zealmightyspork.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just as likely to call a guy a cunt, there's no misogynistic intent behind it. Don't like my language, don't talk to me.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I don't approve of this ridiculous investigative shit employers have got going on these days. But the thing is that it's a fact, whether you like it or not, so until it changes you simply have to use your head and make sure they can't link anything to you.

I've had separate emails for casual use & srs bsns, eg work-related, stuff for years now. The only online people who know my last name are those I've known for years. I've got a gazillion handles, and I'm not in the habit of using my real birthdate or location. If a potential employer actually managed to pin something on me I'd be so fucking impressed that I'd be much more interested in figuring out how the hell he did it than getting the job.

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The word itself is heavily and negatively gendered in use and meaning.

And even if you use different handles, if you've ever used paypal, worked for state, local, or fed govt, gone to university, gotten a license, been involved with a business with a web presence, been in the paper, etc your real name is out there. I had someone figure out how to tie me to a piece of fanfic I'd written 10 years and as many SNs ago and I had never posted my real name anywhere. That person was looking as an exercise and with my okay, not as pre-hiring investigation, but the idea that you're ever anonymous on the internet without taking CIA-level precautions is completely fallacious. So yeah, I think your reaction was inappropriate given that it does happen and the OP has a legitimate fear. This is also fandom secrets, where obviously people say things they wouldn't say or make a big deal about either. There was no reason for you to react as you did, either to him/her or to me.

[identity profile] zealmightyspork.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay then. I don't give a shit. I'm a big girl, I'll use whatever language I see fit. Don't like it, get offline.

I'm sorry? I made a shallow, dismissive joke, YOU are the one who jumped on me with 'lol you obviously have no idea how the REAL, ADULT WORLD works'.

you're making a ridiculously big deal out of absolutely zilch. Go argue with someone else, I'm not in the mood. I'm confident some random twat won't e-track me down, OP is terrified. Different strokes. I couldn't care less.

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Being commented on is part of posting comments on a public community. Deal.

[identity profile] zealmightyspork.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I replied, didn't I. seems to me I dealt pretty fabulously~

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, by calling me a cunt. Even if I misinterpreted what you were saying, that wasn't appropriate. If being misread or read literally is enough to make you respond that way you maybe shouldn't be saying it in the first place on a public discussion forum. People's tones get misinterpreted all the time on the internet (you clearly missed mine). You can have a disagreement with a modicum of civility and without the loaded, offensive terminology.

[identity profile] zealmightyspork.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I swear a lot. my best friends get called bitches on a daily basis. it's hot, it's late, and the non-srs bsns nature of this comm does not make me want to be all ~careful and PC~ with my language. no offense was intended, though you've made it very much clear that it was taken.

it's just a word, chill already. you're gonna have a heart-attack before you're 30 if you get worked up every time someone on the interwebs calls you a mean word.

What if you're, say, 15 and your fanfic is connected to your email, but it's not a professional email address? Is that really going to stop me from being hired when I get to be an adult? Because seriously, I wouldn't not hire someone for having a slightly odd hobby while they're in high school.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-25 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Plus, it's not exactly fair that people who draw fanart aren't subject to the same thing (unless they are, but it seems like it would be less harshly judged).

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Distance and subject matter do matter. Does that G-rated Pokemon fic you wrote at age 11 hurt your hiring chances? No, that's absurd. But if it's an ongoing hobby, or something more recent (if you're looking for a job during/after college, high school was only 2-5 years ago, and they may not even notice that it's several years old), or you've ever written something more adult, just be cautious, and keep the email addresses as separated as possible. Even if it could be linked back to you most employers don't dig that deep if they can find things with basic email and name searches.

(And yes, there is a double-standard for kid-friendly fanart, and yes, it kinda sucks).

(Anonymous) 2009-08-25 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind then.
My only question is, do they really go to the trouble of READING all of this? One of my fics is 40,000+ words and it only gets starts getting sexual around 10+. Would they read all of that or just go "hey, fuck it, this potential employee is a weirdo, mark them off as such"?

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, I'm sure they wouldn't read all of it if they did (my own are ~2000 word porn, so I have different concerns ;p). You probably have ratings or content warnings so they'd know it was dirty without reading it, though, no? I mean, as a general rule it's best to keep it as separate as possible especially if you think someday in the future you might end up in a conservative/professional field (because I've learned from experience that nothing on the internet dies, eeeever).

(Anonymous) 2009-08-26 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense. I guess I'm not particularly worried because the only thing outrightly connected with my fics is my email address, (which I'm sure won't still be one I use 5 years from now), and I'm sure I have stray bits of information out there too.
I'm strongly considering going into a branch of journalism. Would you consider that conservative/professional?

(Anonymous) 2009-08-26 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Whoops. *and I'm sure I have stray bits of information out there too, but nothing particularly damning.

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously?

o_o

ffffuuuuuck.

(well, I use a different email for fandom stuff and important school/work related stuff, so... maybe I'm okay... but...)

WTF, hell, I don't think I'd want to be hired by a company that anal.

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
What sucks about it is that hiring is usually done by senior management, and senior management is often withered old dudes. So even if the people you'd be working with entry-level are really cool and don't think normal involvement in fandom is weird, the old guy who makes the decisions doesn't necessarily get it. I just use my real name and email on facebook and a couple safe hobby forums, and maintain entirely different SNs and emails for fandom. So with any luck, they see the safe, normal me, and don't spend another fifteen minutes trying to find not-normal me. That's about the most you can do. The other stuff is still trackable if someone's determined, but very few will go to the trouble of looking. (And that's definitely somewhere I don't want to work ;p)

Or, alternatively, you could get a cool job that doesn't involve suits or conservative old dudes in management. Sometimes I wish I could just herd goats and be all out and proud with my weirdness.

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... I'd like to believe my choice of career won't have anyone in the higher-ups that would give a damn.

But. Should probaby keep RL and fandom separate, anyway. :/

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
(...actually, I DID get hired once by someone who was really into fandom herself and she was totally cool with my involvement, of course. But she was 30 at the time, so there you go.)

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's just stupid. :|

I know the obvious response will be, "But that's how it is." That doesn't stop it from being...just stupid.

Do they think that everyone working in their field will have to be all serious and professional acting 24/7?

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
It is stupid. I totally agree. I don't think your publicly visible hobbies should matter unless you're into racism or really violent porn something like that. Things that might actually make a client legitimately dislike or distrust you as a human being. It's doubly-stupid because some stupid hobbies get a free pass (like writing fanfic is so much more unprofessional than painting your body and screaming at a football game?)
