Best and Worst Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2024-08-03 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
What's the best fandom you were ever in? Worst? We have threads like this now and again and I always like reading the responses.

Define best and worst however you like, whether that's based on the amount of drama, number of fics, friends you made, etc.

I had so much fun in Inception fandom back when the movie came out, there was some great fic on the kink meme. I made great friends in 2010s MCU fandom as well.

Worst... would be Homestuck, it was really hard to avoid drama in my corner of the fandom. Maybe I just got unlucky with the part of fandom I ended up in, and other sections were more chill, idk, but the bad far outweighed the good for me in that fandom.

Best was

A) the star wars fandom just before the phantom menace came out in 1998. The fandom has never been that hopeful and joyous ever again - all the speculation and excitement will never be matched imo.

B) the Robert Carlyle fandom on Tumblr around 2011 - lots of art and fic and watch parties and tons of gifs and commentary.

Best: Tolkien fandom, hands down. Overall the nicest fandom I've been in, the most varied fandom (basically there is something for everyone), the most fun fandom.

Worst: Either Supernatural or Star Wars. Just for how nasty people get. For me the worst is when "fans" send hate to creators or are generally creepy to real life people. Not okay.

They were all the best and the worst, honestly. It just depended on what kind of folks a group attracted and how big the group got.

For me the worst fandoms are fandoms that tend to run young. Not because they are more problematic or something, but they are just really damn boring for me.

Worst currently: Genshin Impact. I'm very glad that so far, I've curated my connection to that fandom with very few fanartists I like and follow but sometimes I go to the controversial ship tags just to block antis for fun.

But honestly, Dungeon Meshi of all fandoms is currently going a bad direction as well, especially if you ship certain characters. It's the curse of getting popular, I guess, but damn. Lots of really disgustingly ableist assholes in there.

Best: All quite dead by now, unfortunately, but I liked my stay in the Havemercy, The Dark ist Rising and Hornblower fandoms a lot.

Best fandom I was in was a subfandom for a rarepair. Good fanworks and very nice people.

Worst fandom was one that attracted a 4chan fanbase. Enough said.

Best: pre Nineties Doctor Who.

Worst: Gundam Wing. My favorite hobby within that fandom was laughing my butt off at all of the OOC fics. Protip: the fics are ten times more hilarious if you are very familiar with the source material. Laugh riot.

The best fandom experiences I've had were in little subsections of larger properties: Rogue and Rogue/Gambit in super hero comics, Rogue Trader in all of Warhammer 40k, Wizards Unite in all of Harry Potter, Lotr books in the sea of Lotr movie fans, ect.

The worst fandom experiences come in three types: fandom with a younger audience (good heavens the immaturity and weirdness), large fandoms where I can't find a little tide pool and just feel lost at sea, and fandoms that attract "normies" who don't appreciate the peculiar culture of fandom. Examples include Avatar the last Airbender (good show, fandom gave me acne and yellowed my teeth), Star Wars (there's some real good fic but JESUS the drama, no where was safe), and Game of Thrones (all yall need to stop writing petitions and start writing fanfic).

Best: early 2000s xxxholic on LJ (also the CLAMP fandom was an overall happy time) and the Undertale fantom on Deviantart pre-eclipse update (fan groups were everything, especially the fan comics group. Zarla's skeleton brother pre-canon comics were heart wrenching)

Worst: Hetalia on LJ (mainly people going batshit over shipping and just... really bad taste fanworks) and sort of Star Trek tos fandom on tumblr (I've gone back into it recently and been having a good time - but the dumb drama back in 2016/17 had left a bad taste in my mouth)
