Re: Secrets you don't want to make...

In the year 2024, in internet fandom of all places, it amazes me how many people don't quite grasp the idea of what a troll is.

A troll doesn't have to be lying or saying fake things or claiming things they don't believe in order to be a troll. All it has to do is be deliberately trying to offend or get a rise out of others, even if it believes everything it saying.

"Boo hoo, how dare you, I'm not a troll, I believe in the intentionally inflammatory thing I said!" Sorry, grandma, I don't think you quite get how this slang works.

Someone remind me to make a Richard Dwakins joke when this secret rolls out.

Just as long are you aren't confusing "inflammatory comment" for "troll."

Depends on whether the anon in the thread is leaving a trail of purposely inflammatory contents, tbh. A comment being unintentionally inflammatory is one thing, right? Debates happen. People argue.

However, going into the cat ladies club and posting "you were mean to me so I'm voting for Vance" is another. Even if they really truly pinkie swear mean it, ballot in hand, swearing they're not trolling because it's the truth... that's a troll.

I genuinely wonder whether or not secret OP knows the difference.

lol secret OP is me. :)

I'm just tired of people claiming "I'm not a troll, I'm ~just stating my opinion~" as though that makes their whole response in good faith and not trolly. Nah, that's not how it works, especially when they know their opinion is going to cause drama.

There are many ways to post in bad faith without outright making shit up.

We know you’re a troll and we know you know you’re a troll. We’ll still feed you sometimes, but your novelty has worn off so don’t expect to get as much as before.

I don't post much here, certainly not enough to be a recognizable anon. I think you're confusing me with someone else. This is p much the only thread where I've been called a troll, which is funny to me.

All I'm pointing out that trolls don't have to be lying to be trolling. Especially the trolls here. For example, someone posting their genuine, closely held beliefs and still be trolling because where, when, and how they post something is in total bad faith and done as outrage bait. Lots of people here seem to think that trolling is faking, or only when someone's saying stuff they don't mean, and that's a completely wrong take.

Obviously inflammatory politics threads here are almost always troll threads, for example.

In the year 2024, people still don't let you (whoever you are) redefine all their words for them at your leisure. The nerve of people.

"Troll" standing for someone who's arguing in bad faith is a useful concept on fandom secrets. It helps people have intelligent conversations about subjects where someone is disagreeing with the majority of commenters, but willing to explain why they think what they think and willing to listen. Several of those threads have taught me things. Your proposed definition just turns the word into another generic insult.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(slang)

The amount people who don't understand trolling as a concept truly does concern me.

A conservative deliberately going into a liberal space and posting for example, homophobic stances they truly believe in is a troll, because the point was to cause offense and stir drama. A liberal going into a conservative space and posting for example, anti 2A stances they truly believe in is a troll, because the point was to cause offense and stir drama. Both of these are in bad faith, even if those people truly believe in what they say, so none of what you said contradicts the definition.

I don't know why you and others think that "saying something in bad faith" and "believing in what they say" is somehow exclusive. Where, when, how, and why someone says something can be in fully bad faith regardless of the content of the message or the poster's beliefs.

The word troll means things.

Notice how situational your definition of whether something is trolling is, though? Fandom is not "a space for just liberals" and much less a space for just conservatives. It's for people who appreciate fiction, play, and stories. And they aren't trespassing by expressing their opinions here. By what right would you have more of a right to be in fandom than others? But joining a community and saying whatever inflammatory shit comes into your head, just because you find it fun to watch other people get mad, is an abuse of the space. That's why the social boundaries are where they are, here - at sincerity rather than uniformity of opinion.

Any good definition of trolling should also show a clear and fair way to tell when one person is accusing someone else of trolling (in bad faith) just to try to win an argument. When you don't have that, each individual definition of what "counts" as a comment that no one should take seriously or respond to will just map onto personal prejudices.

Sorry it took me a while to reply, but what you're taking issue with is important (and probably not obvious at all) and I wanted to try to explain clearly.

Trolling IS situational. I don't know how that argues against anything I said.

I didn't say fandom is liberal. I said if you go into a liberal space and say something that will rile up liberals for lib tears, you're a troll. If you go into a conservative space and say something that will rile up conservatives for conservative tears, you're a troll. Even if you don't realize it.

I can't respond further to your comment because it's based on arguing against something I didn't even say.
