I don't know who was in charge of dressing Craig, but they were shit at their job. Those suits looked like the sort of garbage a second rate bouncer would wear, or self-styled "hard" man who was about to cry like pussy when the serious hardman bounced him out.

I recall reading somewhere that the tight suit look was on purpose. I forget the reasoning, but... yeah, they didn't look great. He's a big enough man, no need to exaggerate it by putting him in jackets with the buttons straining across the front.

Casino Royale - Costume Design by Lindy Hemming (won an Oscar for Costume Design in 1999)
Quantum of Solace - Costume Design by Louise Frogley
Skyfall and Spectre - Costume Design by Jany Temime
No Time to Die (2021)- Costume Design by Suttirat Anne Larlarb

A lot of his suits, shirts, and sunglasses are Tom Ford.

Not sure it would actually end because I've seen A LOT of allegedly bespoke suits lately looking obviously too tight on plenty of men, even official runway versions. I feel it's actually a crappy trend (in addition to being done on purpose in the Bond movies).

Fucking co-signed! It was a terrible look even if you don’t hate skinny suits. His were tailored to be too small in spots so he would look more muscular but instead he just looked like he needed a new wardrobe.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-05 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Right? Like, it doesn't actually make his muscles stand out; it makes it seem like he doesn't know what a properly fitted suit is supposed to look like, which undermines the debonair spy vibe.

The point is that Craig!Bond *isn't* supposed to be a debonair spy. That is not the version of Bond that Craig was playing. He took a different angle - the whole idea is that he's basically a thug with a veneer of sophistication over him. They wanted to play up the power and intensity and violence of the character.

First: did you know that you can change the dropdown from Casual HTML to Markdown, which will make it so that the asterisks actually italicize things? I discovered this a month or so ago and it was a gamechanger.

Second, while that's a good point, I don't think having ill-fitting suits succeeded in making it. He doesn't look like a thug; he just looks like he's a poor dresser.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-05 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, and those ill-fitting suits look especially tight around the shoulders and armholes which catch or hamper your range of motion, so it isn't even like a character decision that would give him an edge in a fight.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-05 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not using asterisks because I want to italicize things. If I wanted to italicize things, I would use HTML and do it. I'm using asterisks because I want to use asterisks to emphasize things.

And second... yeah, that's fair! You don't have to like what they were going for, or think that they pulled it off. I just think it was an intentional choice to make him not a debonair spy.

I think it works well for the Craig version of the character but I agree that they should move to a new tack.

Do you feel like this is reflective of trends in general? Because it seems to me that a particular attitude toward clothing has grown up around the body positivity movement, wherein any suggestion that clothes should "fit" or "flatter" your frame is taken as a personal and often fatphobic jab.

Now, not saying Daniel Craig is fat or even that he has a less socially acceptable body type. He clearly fits within what the mainstream considers attractive. However, I do think a lot of people right now have taken the idea that larger people shouldn't be shamed for showing some skin or wearing what they want to mean that it's wrong to think that clothes should, well, fit. And the idea that Bond should wear a suit that properly fits him, rather than a suit that's too small but that he just personally likes, runs afoul of that sense.
