He got a little bit better by the end of the season. I blame the director for going too all in on the Noir pastiche. They overdid it a little, too much of the noir asthetic and not enough actual noir. It is a hard balance.

It did get better by the end - my main complaint after the first episode was using the same voice, whether he was Bruce or Batman, but they seemed to have sorted that out pretty quick, and even when doing the Batman voice it's not as bad as it was at the start.

It's still a fairly pale imitation of Conroy and Bale (who I also think influenced it).

He was fine. I don't know. Kevin Conroy was really fucking good, you're not gonna find a perfect replacement for him. Linklater did well enough not to bring the series down.

I can't comment on his performance but I think this is a bug of animated productions becoming more "prestige"—a lot of larger names are willing to take jobs they might not have considered twenty years ago. And not every performer can be Mark Hamill, Theo James, or Clancy Brown (equally competent in voice acting and live action). So you get performances where actors haven't learned to make their voice do 100% of the acting yet.

Another good example of this is The Boys: Diabolical. Some of the main series cast really struggled to provide credible voice acting.

It really sounded like the kind of voice Batman would have in a parody

Haven't heard Linklater yet but let's face it, Conroy's a damn hard act to follow.

I think Diedrich Bader did a rather good turn in Batman: The Brave and the Bold but he had the advantage in being in a generally comedic series and coming up with a good Comically Serious voice.

agreed, I enjoyed Bader a lot!

Do not underestimate Hamish Linklater.

Note to self: do not listen to Frank Welker’s version of Batman ever again.

I don’t know if I need another laughing fit.
