I can't comment on his performance but I think this is a bug of animated productions becoming more "prestige"—a lot of larger names are willing to take jobs they might not have considered twenty years ago. And not every performer can be Mark Hamill, Theo James, or Clancy Brown (equally competent in voice acting and live action). So you get performances where actors haven't learned to make their voice do 100% of the acting yet.

Another good example of this is The Boys: Diabolical. Some of the main series cast really struggled to provide credible voice acting.
