I don't like meat

(Anonymous) 2024-08-10 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It just doesn't taste good and the texture is unappealing. People get really rioed up if it comes up, so I try to not bring it up but its so silly becaise it seems so harmless an opinion.

I feel this way about pork. And most of the time beef, though I occasionally like a burger. Steak is gross, though. And I hate lamb and most other meats. I do love seafood, though, and enjoy chicken or turkey done right.

Chicken/Turkey (they taste the same to me) is the only one I can say I have any favorable opinion on. It's very neutral to me.

Kinda same, as in I really like chicken and cook that the most as it's so versatile but I find beef actively unpleasant, can only eat pork a little bit and like lamb very occasionally.

I've had less people get funny about it at me as I've gotten older but I do have people have this 'whaaaat you weirdo' type reaction if I get asked if I like bacon and I reply no because I personally think it's greasy and disgusting no matter how it's cooked. That's the meat no one understands me disliking, others most people seem to be able to understand as a person preference.

If you're lucky enough to get bacon cooked *really* crisp it's a lot better, but often there's enough of a fat stripe that it's gonna be oily. These days I find its saltiness a little overpowering.

I love all meat but I'm sorry there are some weird people in your midst.

I eat meat occasionally but I'm still on board with this. I was raised vegetarian until I was 15 and while I enjoy the flavour of some of it, the texture of it has always been really grim to me. I can only enjoy it when it's "well-disguised" and part of a bigger dish. I'll never be able to just chow down on a wing or a leg of anything.

Same! I’m actually allergic to most meat but part of why it took so long to figure that out is because I always picked vegetarian options if there were any. I ended up having to go full vegan* after diagnosis.

*I’m only allergic to mammals. But I can’t stand fish or seafood and the small tolerance I had for the taste and texture of poultry and fowl has long since passed.

I'm a meat lover as far as purely taste and texture go, and I can easily see why others wouldn't prefer it. Heck, certain dishes are much tastier to me in their veggie version. I've seen people act like what you described here, it's really weird.

I grew up in an environment where people get weirdly angry and defensive about meat eating, because even though I always liked eating meat, vegetarian diets always made sense to me? So I was always careful about expressing being OK with vegetarians (like, IDEFK how I survived in such a stupidly entitled and quick to rage over fucking nothing environment).

Hitting my late 30s I've been drawn to more meat-free dishes due to taste changes and trying to rely less on meat to help (even if just a little) lessen my carbon footprint.
It's not that hard to do, especially with how easy it is to find creative recipes online (for me lately it's mostly random YT shorts recc'd to me).

I don't miss or crave meat as much as I used to. I used to feel like I had to have every meal every day with meat as my protein.
But these days I can go a few days meat-free and not crave it for a while.

Also, I've had periods of some meats not hitting right on my palette.
Pork and its porky flavor (a friend describes it as a "dirty taste") can make me nauseous sometimes
Chicken can feel like rubber in my mouth sometimes.
There was a period where seafood tasted rank no matter how it wad prepared, and I love seafood.
I can sometimes not have a care for beef (I actually like ground turkey more than ground beef; sometimes crumbled tofu is better too!). But when the steak cravings happen, NGL I like to pretend I'm a vampire in need of blood.

I think some of weirdness about meat comes from defensiveness (and some people are just jerks).
I love meat and it's not something I can safely exclude from my diet. But I can't stand mushrooms (nor smell, nor texture, nor taste. I just hate it) and people sometimes are so weird about it too.
