I think the key here is that Valancy is never actually said to be scared of Barney in this scene. She knows him well enough that it never occurs to her that he actually would hurt her, and she's right. They actually have a ridiculously healthy marriage.

I also think that line is meant more to convey frustration rather than anger, which comes later. Like someone saying or thinking "am I going to have to smack the sense back into you?!" or "jesus christ why don't I just put your head through the wall, that would make as much sense as you". Hyperbole.

Yeaaaaaah, that's still not very nice, IMO. Implicit threats of violent physical assault to express one's frustrations is a huge red flag.
