But did he snatch her or beat her?

He didn't, no.

I haven't read the book but from the excerpt provided, I don't get the feeling she thought the part where he looked like he wanted to snatch or beat her was romantic. Her reply to him after that part is wry and still disbelieving?

I think what the author was going for was not that this sort of interaction is romantic but that the interaction is someone revealing their true feelings and insecurities which are more true than passionate pretty words, though definitely in a ham-fisted kind of way.

SA

Like it says that she is surprised at first, then laughs... not that she is ever scared or afraid.

This is my reminder to re-read this book. I think I'm in my summer of Valancy too...minus this stuff

I think the key here is that Valancy is never actually said to be scared of Barney in this scene. She knows him well enough that it never occurs to her that he actually would hurt her, and she's right. They actually have a ridiculously healthy marriage.

I also think that line is meant more to convey frustration rather than anger, which comes later. Like someone saying or thinking "am I going to have to smack the sense back into you?!" or "jesus christ why don't I just put your head through the wall, that would make as much sense as you". Hyperbole.

Yeaaaaaah, that's still not very nice, IMO. Implicit threats of violent physical assault to express one's frustrations is a huge red flag.

There are definitely some 'dated' type of lines in that book that stick out, but thankfully I can kind of go with the flow and gloss over anything. Thankfully, because it's one of my favorite books and I'd be so sad to suddenly not be able to enjoy it.

I didn't read it for years because all I knew about LM Montgomery was the Anne books and while I love the old school mini series the books always bored me. I'm so thankful my mother pushed it on me again when I was a bit older and told me to just give it a try because boy did I end up falling in love.

I feel the same way. Love the book, and reread it at least once a year. It's definitely a product of its time however, and some things make me wince a little, but it's still one of my faves.

that part specifically (snatch her or beat her) doesn't bother me. that's just frustrated anger when someone is telling you, you don't know your own feelings. i could understand why that would give you the ick, but i don't think that's meant that way and seems more like an archaic phrasing of a pretty common and benign trope.

the part after, where he returns the favor, honestly feels more ick to me, even if i'm grateful he doesn't actually insult her. it just trends too close to a certain type of misogynist thinking in response to rejection that i despise. but...i don't think that's mean to actually be violent either. it's meant to clue valancy in that it's actually quite shit when someone tells you you're faking with all sincerity. but yeah i get why you wouldn't like it.
