Fun fact: I have never been to a Thanksgiving Dinner that had sweet potato casserole. I always thought that was one of those made up for TV type of dishes until I randomly brought it up and nope, it's a real deal traditional meal.

I've only had sweet potatoes but never as a casserole.

I think that green bean, canned mushroom soup and fried canned onion rings thing falls under the "made up for TV" category; I've NEVER actually seen that at Thanksgiving and I've been to a LOT of different places for Thanksgiving.

I make green bean casserole every year. And sometimes not on holidays but just for an ordinary day dinner. Yum!

It's pretty common in the Midwest. Before every Thanksgiving, you'll start seeing end cap displays in grocery stores with canned green beans, cream of mushroom soup and French's fried onions. There's no sign to explain why all those things are gathered in the same spot because everyone knows why, lol. It's not a gourmet thing by any means, but I confess... I rather like it, and I make it on non-Thanksgiving occasions, too.
