I dislike a significant number of traditional Thanksgiving dishes. Turkey has never impressed me as a meat, I'd much rather eat roast chicken or if we're splurging, a nice prime rib. That sweet potato casserole with marshmallows is way too sweet, even as a dessert. And stuffing is just... okay. I like the taste of cranberry jelly, but I don't like meat/sweet stuff combos so I never eat it.

Fun fact: I have never been to a Thanksgiving Dinner that had sweet potato casserole. I always thought that was one of those made up for TV type of dishes until I randomly brought it up and nope, it's a real deal traditional meal.

I've only had sweet potatoes but never as a casserole.

I think that green bean, canned mushroom soup and fried canned onion rings thing falls under the "made up for TV" category; I've NEVER actually seen that at Thanksgiving and I've been to a LOT of different places for Thanksgiving.

I make green bean casserole every year. And sometimes not on holidays but just for an ordinary day dinner. Yum!

i'm in the midwest, and i see green bean casserole every damn year. i'm not op but i'm also not a fan of any thanksgiving staples, but that one is the worst

It's pretty common in the Midwest. Before every Thanksgiving, you'll start seeing end cap displays in grocery stores with canned green beans, cream of mushroom soup and French's fried onions. There's no sign to explain why all those things are gathered in the same spot because everyone knows why, lol. It's not a gourmet thing by any means, but I confess... I rather like it, and I make it on non-Thanksgiving occasions, too.

I wonder what you'd think of my... well, it sure ain't *traditional* but it's become a tradition when I have the opportunity to do a Thanksgiving dinner... kung pao turkey stir-fry? It baffles the butchers at the meat counter when I go and request just a couple pounds of turkey breast, cubed for stir-frying.

I love a good stir fry, but it's hard for me not to speculate that using chicken, pork or beef would be better than turkey. I just don't like the taste or texture.

I find the texture as agreeable as any stir-fry-- maybe a tad less chewy-- for what that's worth. It's just funny to tell people you whomped up Kung Pao Turkey with Pumpkin Seeds (instead of the peanuts) for Thanksgiving. And, tbh, it doesn't knock you out quite like the tradition gravy-intensive main dish!

that sounds good as long as the turkey doesn't get too dried out!

That's what the marinade and velveting are for! Plus it doesn't take very long to cook once your wok is good and hot.

Tbh I always preferred honey-baked ham over turkey... but now pig attacks me on the regular so I can't eat it as much anymore :(

Prime rib sounds really good though!

A good spiral cut ham is way preferable to turkey, too!

My family always did ham and turkey for thanksgiving.
