Adaptations that annoy you...

(Anonymous) 2024-08-11 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a thread for people to air their (possibly petty) complaints about adaptations that made annoying changes. What adaptation did you dislike and why?

Ella Enchanted

Might as well be an original script. That was my favorite book growing up and I was so excited, and then they just changed everything.

Agreed. It wasn't the same at all.

I hate how they changed the end of The Martian. Flying around in space like Iron Man is stupid and stood out horribly in an otherwise mostly scientifically accurate movie.

Lords of the Rings, Jackson. Where do I begin? The Golden Wood that's blue, DENETHOR, angsty Aragorn who doesn't want to be a king, comedy short people, surfing Legolas, fair-skinned blond green-eyed Sam, the Dead liberating white-walled Minas Tirith, three months on the stairs of Cirith Ungol and an afternoon crossing Mordor... I'm getting itchy just thinking about it all.

SAME. OMG. I almost walked out of Fellowship opening night when Bree was a dark, scary horror movie set instead of the last glorious moment of happiness before the actual darkness. I have never seen the other two movies for the reasons you elucidate (the more I hear about what changed, the worse it gets). The LOTR movies are the opposite of how movies have to be different from books because visuals/time/reasons, they're Jackson's fever dream as he personally interpreted the books which are NOT how most of us interpreted the books.

I do love these movies. But I also have a whole lot of issues with them. I'll add the adaption of Elrond to this list. Way to completely misunderstand his character.

The Netflix/BBC Watership Down miniseries. Why is there a fucking romance subplot? Who decided the book about rabbits needed a romance subplot? Also way to show that Hazel is fit to be the Chief Rabbit of Watership by taking every leadership decision he makes on the journey to the down in the novel and either removing it or giving it to another character while Hazel waffles, frets, and thinks some more about the stupid random rabbit he was in love with that no one cares about.

omg wait what. whose romance subplot? I mean, in the book there is a whole side quest to find does so they can mate and make babies but uh. that wouldn't be a romance subplot afaik.

The miniseries first gave Hazel some random rabbit girl at Sandleford that he was in love with, and then made Clover his love interest and gave her a bunch of prominence, including being kidnapped by Woundwort at one point. The part that pissed me off is they took the scene where Fiver finds the injured Hazel after the farm raid (the part that got adapted into the famous Bright Eyes sequence in the animated movie) and gave it to *Clover.*

Netflix’s The Witcher. I wouldn’t have cared at all (I was practically against a live action adaptation) except the nonstop promotional bullshit that they were following the books. Everything about it was so bad and some of the casting was extremely racist. But during season 1, anyone who said anything bad about it was called a racist because of the actor who plays Yennifer. Her race is unimportant in terms of the character but her acting sure as fuck matters and she’s terrible. She also isn’t pretty enough (or have the charisma necessary to make up for it) or commanding enough to be believable. And then there’s Dandelion which is just…how the fuck do you model a show on time skips and then forget to age your human character? And the choice to style him the way they did…ugh. Threw me right out any time I tried to watch. The showrunner truly sucks in every way. But saying that just makes the show fandom scream about misogyny. Like, hello? Women showrunners who suck aren’t immune to being called out about just because they’re women.

At least I’ve had the joy of watching everything about that show crash and burn. And I’m happy the show fans have left the main fandom and carved out their own niche. We like what we like, I have no problem with that. But man it got annoying for a couple years there with show fans trying to impose spoiler warnings or posting content about the show but not tagging it as the show and instead making it look like it was about The Witcher, not Netflix’s The Witcher. And I’m happy that it was so bad that it’s already legendary for it.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy movie

The first adaptation of the story that I thought really missed the mark on tone and humour.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy movie

A bunch of gratuitous blood. A serious weakening/flattening of several interesting characters. And totally bafflingly… swapping two characters’ names for no reason at all.

EVERY movie and TV version of Alice in Wonderland. Not one has captured the spirit of the books. Some are worse than others.

A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999) - a combination of casting and direction just left me cold.

A lot of the cast just didn't seem to fit the characters. I had no issues with Kevin Kline as Nick Bottom, Michelle Pfeiffer as Titania, or Rupert Everett as Oberon, but just about everybody else seemed wrong. Tucci's a great and versatile actor and Puck's a great part, so I have to believe at least some of the problem was direction.

The 2004 Phantom of the Opera movie has my eternal ire for lots of reasons (seriously why 1871 that is such a pointlessly stupid choice and there's literally no reason not to go with 1881, when Paris wasn't under fucking siege, grr) because it manages to combine "well we want everyone to do their own singing because it's more authentic" with "not Minnie Driver just dub her lol" and "the only one of our three leads who can sing is the one who's canonically not a singer," for a perfect storm of shit.

Add in Joel "Batnipples" Schumacher insisting on boob padding for the 16 year old Christine and ass padding for the 35 year old Phantom. And Butler's only saving grace being that he refused to do the final lair scenes shirtless and flat old told Schumacher that wasn't the point. Also Schumacher's "well if you like the musical you should just stay home," and Butler's "well it's all about sex." Oh and Raoul and Christine are childhood friends but Raoul and the Phantom are the same age and Christine meets 18 year old Erik when she's like 8 so yay for grooming I guess?

And most especially that Rossum couldn't sing the score as written and Butler couldn't even get close, even autotuned to death, and he sounded like Bullwinkle the Moose's inexplicably Scottish cousin.

Which lead to a rash of fanfics full of teen Christine, not to mention hot Scottish aristocrat Erik with blazing green eyes, a gravelly voice, six-pack abs, and chest hair.

For fuck's sake I would've forgiven at least half of that if they'd just dubbed Rossum and Butler with better singers.
