Is my fandom history really so off, or am I correct in that the term "Big Bang" was originally not supposed to describe the event but exactly the type of content OP expected it to be...

Good question. The fandom Big Bangs I interacted with were from a period where the name just made no sense - they were just multifandom fic fests.

Big Bangs were originally events where people made fanfic of a minimum length, usually at least 50k (hence Big).
