Just a fuckwit who's internet-famous on youtube, and is currently being accused of fraud and other questionable conduct.

The part of the story that made its way to me involved pretending to give away expensive valuables (like cars), but all the people who supposedly won them from him were just acting. So, any real viewers who hoped signal-boosting him or whatever would "give them the opportunity to win," like he claimed, actually had zero chance and didn't know it.

If the scandal around him takes down a lot of other sleazy little businesspeople hoping to make their fortune on the internet with false promises and shell games, because other people wise up, that would be great.

Being Romani and his whole family being persecuted/victimized for it is part of his origin story IIRC, so there's some standing for it on a story level.

OTOH they had non-Jewish actors play Magneto the Holocaust survivor so idk where the outrage was back then.

Romani aren't "white" in the sense that they don't enjoy the privileges of whiteness.

Romani are heavily discriminated against and have been for centuries. They barely qualify as white to most "white" people in Europe. And they were killed by the millions during the Holocaust.

True, Romani bigotry is largely a European thing, but it's still weird Disney/Marvel hired a non-Romani to portray a famously Romani character like Doom.

Ehhhhhh, I mean the RDJ casting is a bad casting for other reasons. It would be nice to hire a Romani actor for the role but I don't think it's an absolute necessity; after all, Doctor Doom is a technological and magical supergenius who is the absolute king of a fictional country, he is very far from any kind of reality in how he is depicted.

RDJ was barely known when Iron Man came out, right? The MCU made him a star.

So I think it's extra-frustrating for fans to see the contrast. If Marvel put in the effort, they could've found a Romani actor who was barely known, and given him the chance to rise to the same stardom. (It's worked with other characters! Ms. Marvel is Iman Vellani's acting debut, and look how fantastic she is. One of the treasures of the current MCU.)

Instead, they're just...going back to a guy who's gotten all that benefit and exposure and opportunity already.

There are a lot of actual homophobes who shout about that, sure. But with several instances I’ve seen, I think it was more complicated than that and had to do with both parties misunderstanding how certain other people do fandom.

Take the phrase “There is no heterosexual explanation for this.” To most people who know fandom, this phrase is a meme, an exaggeration, a way to say “I ship it.” They don’t mean it literally. But to someone who doesn’t know that, it could come off as an insistence that platonic friends could never care about each other that much or show affection in whatever way prompted the statement, and it IS reasonable to be annoyed by that viewpoint.

It’s also telling who’s being homophobic and who really is concerned about people devaluing friendship if you know whether or not they react the same way about het ships that are canonically just friends (I know I do, much more often than with gay ships) but sometimes all you see from someone is one reaction to one ship, and you don’t know if there’s a pattern or not.
