Writing Tips

Share?

Please.

I'm attempting to write fic right now and I'm...struggling, to say the least.

Alternatively, are any of you out there writers? Tell me about your WIPs or your most recently finished works?

I've got three WIPs.

1. Sauron creating the One Ring fic.
2. A Sauron/Melkor fic post Beren and Luthien.
3. This multi-one shot PWP fic that is basically exploring different kinks

I haven't written in almost two years, though. My muse seems gone. At one point I had a few ideas for the first one, but by the time I actually had time to write the ideas were gone.

:(

I'm sorry your muse has deserted you for the time being.

I haven't published anything since 2016. I have a lot of ideas across lots of fandoms, and very little confidence in my ability to pull them off.

Thanks. I think I'm just out of mental energy. I'm sure your ideas would be great, sorry you aren't feeling confident in yourself.

Have confidence in the fact that you are the only one who would do your ideas your way!

If you are worried about not doing your own ideas justice to your own standards, try to remind yourself that anything actually written can be iteratively improved and polished, while something in your imagination will always be the equivalent of a blank page (endless potential, nothing to show).

Do you know what precisely you're struggling with? As in, characterization, or making a plot twist work, thinking up a good ending or even just getting started?

Getting started, for the most part.

I have a lot of ideas rolling around, and no idea which way to narrow them down.

Is it a "too many options" kind of thing? Or do some ideas have more meat than others? Would it be possible to combine a couple of ideas, and see where that leads?

I know this is gonna sound crazy, but the only real way I've found to work through that is to start writing some of the ideas out, and see whether they work once they're on paper. It does mean you'll write a bunch of crap, but pretty much all good writing starts as crap, anyway.

So, my recommendation? For the next week, pick one idea each night and write a handful of paragraphs that play off of it. You're likely to find that some ideas still pique your interest; some are more dull than expected; and one or two actually get into your head a bit, and drive you to want to take them further.

I saw your comment where you're struggling to start a fic. When I do that, I find a prompt list of just random words, start at the first one, and set a timer for 8 minutes.

Then I write for 8 minutes and have to include that completely random word somewhere in my writing.

It doesn't always get me good places, but it gets me somewhere. There's no time to sit around and fret about ideas or anything and the word prompt gives me enough to aim towards without having to think of a bigger picture.

I have two WIPs, but I’m stuck in the, “This freaking sucks”, mindset when I write and I keep deleting and rewriting and I’m not really getting anywhere. I know what I want to write. I have it all drafted out, but when I actually sit and write, it just comes out as trash.

The best advice I can give right now (that i need to follow soon) is that money permitting if you have ADHD ...get something for it,

Sorry probably not helpful but it's killing me right now. My brain wiring prevents me from seeing almost anything through then my OCD is like "welp we're cursed to fail the universe is against us" and I just fall into a self defeating cycle

Oh wow. I hadn't really made the connection because I've done ither sorts of writing, but you made me realize the last time I successfully wrote fanfic or original fiction was back when I had health insurance amd was medicated.

That is both sad and makes me feel a little better about my lack of and difficulties with writing.
