So first, I kind of feel like if you think Johnny Storm's death was meanspirited, you don't understand the Deadpool ethos.

That said, this movie did feel different from the others, and I think that's due to its scope. While the second movie brought in some X-Men, the stakes were still mostly at "sword and sorcery" level, revolving around him and his personal goals. The stakes in this film, however, approach "high fantasy:" it's a world-ending situation. They made it a part of his character arc, sure, but it still pulled it out of a purely Deadpool-ish realm, at least from my perspective.

I'll be happy if it's the last entry mainly because I don't want him to overstay his welcome. Disney doesn't fucking know when to quit.
