My annoyance is that only one or two "secrets you don't want to make" end up starting a discussion...

(Anonymous) 2024-08-17 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-17 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't comment on them because I'm sick of the anon who wants police everybody's opinions has already jumped all over them and they are not fun anymore at all.

+1

Never mind me, I'm just distracted by this gorgeous image.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-17 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't look at those threads because I consider looking at the secrets before they're posted to be spoilers! I also feel it's kinda rude to reply to them because it feels kinda like inserting yourself into a conversation that's mainly between the person with the secret and the secret-maker, often just to blast the person with the secret before they've even had their secret made, and that kinda sucks. I wish it was a norm/common etiquette to keep those threads reply-free!

Doesn't bother me when people engage with my secrets before they're posted. I wrote a message anonymously on a public forum; if I didn't want it seen by anyone else then I would've made the secret myself instead of passing the task to secret maker.

People are usually happy to rehash the same topic if they are around when the actual secret is posted. But I know I'm not here every day and imagine a bunch of others aren't either, so it's nice to have the comment conversation when I am here.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-17 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm often way too late to actual secret posts to be part of the discussion, so when I get to a secret maker thread in time I tend to reply there first.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-17 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here.

I appreciate it because different people are online at different times, so it gives people a chance to participate in an active convo that they otherwise wouldn't be able to. I usually comment on both pretty often.

If I comment in the thread, I often comment on the secret. But if I've misunderstood something in the secret or rethought my opinion, I might not.

I just really want to pet that cat.

Kitty~~~~~~~~~~~~! :D

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
eh I get this, but I sometimes post under there because I'm in Europe and I either post under those threads when I catch them on a decent time or I post under the secret after everyone already left, so...

I don't look at the threads because I want to be surprised every week

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
This makes me wish dreamwidth had an anon DM function, in the way that tumblr does. While it certainly can be used for ill, in this case, it would allow people to DM their secrets to an account, and bypass this issue altogether.

I am usually online when secrets threads are posted. And I am sleeping when secrets posts are posted. So I comment when I see a post. Sometimes both times, whatever.

Also I have a solution for the problem for OP. Make your own secrets. Done.

While I have started making my own secrets, I admit my time is rather limited. Thus, I'll outsource some of my secrets to the secret maker(s) if I'm struggling with something like formatting or doing something that stretches my GIMP skill level too far (for the time being). So the suggestion provided has its own pros and cons that should be considered.

OP and people writing about "etiquette" do not consider that sometimes commenting in the threads is more convenient for some people. Why would I consider how uncomfortable making secrets is?
Snark aside. You can control only yourself so that's absolutely valid suggestion sorry.
