Media literacy is at such a low point, I despair for the future of humanity.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-17 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, there's not much future left anyway

This is what happens when you cut funding to the arts, and make everyone study STEM instead.

DA

That being said, STEM taught well can help people better understand health (mis)information and to call out exaggeration in articles on various scientific topics.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt that would have the result you think it would have.

AYRT

Given that we're seeing some success with science communicators that focus on astronomy, I think that expanding this to other fields of science has potential. Likewise, I feel like Dr. Mike has been doing some good work in the medical misinformation debunking space.

Yet another anon.

Fund stuff labeled STEAM! The A stands for arts.

Signed by a person who is tired of people dismissing the word STEAM as a typo.

I just figure it's what happens when you let idiots be in charge of the schools instead of showing up at local elections to ensure they don't get to ooze in and start banning books and important topics in the curriculum, and dumb down the next generation even more.

Yeah, this comment sums up my frustration with people who only show up for the presidential elections. The lack of acknowledgement that voting in local elections can be a game changer baffles me.

What's been done to the House of the Dragon adaptation is so depressing—such wasted potential. I was hoping it'd get me excited about ASoIaF fandom again, but all it's done is make me think fanfic writers should never have official control over canon. And that D & D weren't that bad, after all.

Can you explain what you mean about fanfic writers being given control over canon? I haven’t heard anything about this but I’m salivating for all the juicy gossip!

I don't know whether "fanfic writers" are on the writing team of HotD or not, but...

Buddy, I can think of 50 fanfic writers who could've wiped their ass and presented a better final season of GoT on a wad of toilet paper than D&D did.

IMO there isn't a difference between a fanfic writer and a "show writer" except that the latter is receiving a paycheck. But this is especially why it's important to make sure you have people who give a fuck about the source material AND any history, AND has the skills to handle and adapt them to the screen, AND has the brains to figure out what does and doesn't work on screen.

Someone explain the IWTV part of this. I'm not in the fandom enough to even understand what it means. People saw a trailer and didn't know the vampire people were doing vampire things?

at the end of this season they put out a promo for next season, essentially the tv version of the book The Vampire Lestat, but they've framed it in the promo not like lestat is writing about himself but that the interviewer, Daniel, from the first two seasons is going to interview him. lestat in the promo is very high diva and a little contemptuous. daniel asks lestat how he likes his book (aka the first two seasons where lestat doesn't come off great) and immediately starts coughing and choking. people were very confused as to why, especially since daniel is supposed to be a vampire now and shouldn't be sick. I think it's pretty obvious that lestat is choking him because he hates the book, but maybe i'm asking for too much.

Oh, now I remember seeing people theorizing about that yeah - ” maybe he's not a vampire yet”, " maybe turning didn't cure him” and like, all else aside, coughing fits aren't even a tiny bit a symptom of Parkinson's???
