If someone goes around the office saying, "mommy mommy, give me my binky, my nappy needs a change" and people think they're immature, does that mean that they are in fact the immature ones?

Sometimes the shit that people say signal that they're immature, or any other number of things. This idea that verbal communication is totally devoid of any social meaning is baffling, particularly when it comes from people who are constantly insisting that everything is socially constructed. You know what social construction does? It creates a web of meaning around your actions, your presentation, and, yes, your words. The things you say fucking matter, and if you speak like a toddler, people are going to slot you into that fucking category. If you don't like that; if you have an overbearing need to have everyone perceive you in a particular way, then change. Your fucking. Speech. Because you know what actually marks you as immature? Your insistence that the entire world, and all of society, needs to change to accommodate you rather than the other way around. You are not more important than everyone else.

If you think fandom is comparable to an office, you might not be as mature as you think you are. What's more, a lot of fandom/internet words sound juvenile or cutesy. Feel(s), doggo, fave, sexytimes, nonny, plotbunny. Hell, as stated upthread, there are people who think squick sounds twee and childish. There’s no winning.

What's this about there not being any winning? Sure there is. The way to win is not use juvenile words and phrases.

Look, even you yourself acknowledge the way these terms sound. If people want to use them, fine, but they shouldn't act offended when others think they come across as immature, particularly since that only adds to the initial impression.
