It's because "people that feel the need to make every single one of their interests into a moral crusade" is basically the modern definition of "queer."

Most of the people I know who identify as queer are gender-conforming straight people (yeah, yeah, they say they think the same sex is hot, but they only ever manage to date people of the opposite sex, even when opportunities to date the same sex are readily available). They're just really vocal about how everyone who doesn't agree with them on everything is a bad person.
