Yeah, it was homophobic. It was also normal and expected back then. Nowadays fandom at large realised that it was homophobic and doesn't do it anymore.

Am I missing something? I'm struggling to see what the secret is here. "Commonly accepted thing in the past was commonly accepted in the past" doesn't seem very noteworthy?

That's because you forgot the part where "commonly accepted thing in the past is now considered homophobic and will likely garner a lot of criticism and accusations of homophobia by people who refuse to understand that things changed over time". It's right there in the secret, though.
