I mean, unless you were on a slash-specific mailing list, back in the day, yeah... you put the 'warning: boys kissing' up there. Was it homophobic that we were expected to? Absolutely. But as a gay guy who's been reading and writing fic on the internet for the past 25 years... it's not that big a deal. I 'warned' for slash on my m/m fics so that I wouldn't have homophobes coming into my inbox yelling at me.

+1, it was an annoying community norm (and not every community had it) but there was also a lot more open homophobia and warning them off was part of the reason. But I also very quickly got into a slash mailing list for my fandom and that was a big relief.

and high five fellow 25 years in fandom gay fellow. those words did not flow, sorry.

did we think it was dumb and the nebulous entity known as "the audience" out there should get over it? of course we did! but we did it anyway. It was the era of internet CYA. I love love love that I can now tag so extremely specifically that either finding or avoiding your loves/hates is as easy as ticking a radio box or twelve.
