Damaged cheese wedge container

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I ordered some groceries, and a cheese wedge container was damaged - there was a dent and the lid was slightly open, maybe by half an inch, like someone had tried to steal the wedges before giving up or maybe getting caught. How safe are the cheese wedges to eat?

I think you're fine. Eat the wedge!

My first thought about cheese safety is actually about the type of cheese and whether it spent more than about two hours above 40°F, regardless of the lid status.

Cheese is a time-honored method of milk preservation, and can be pretty robust if it's not a soft cheese.

Unless the cheese inside looks dirty or like somebody got their fingers into, the cheese is fine, have at it.

I very much doubt anyone was trying to steal the wedges. Most likely the container just got dented/crushed by something else either in the bag or in a bag that was placed on top of/squashed right up against that one. I see that kind of thing happen all the time in my own grocery deliveries.

^ This is the likeliest explanation. I get a lot of grocery pick ups and sometimes shoppers aren't always careful.
