Things You Are Looking Forward To

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-08-21 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
What things are you looking forward to, either in the next few weeks, next few months, or even the next few years?

Oh, wow. I'm so sorry for your brother's cancer. I really hope it works and I really hope this is the last time.

A cure for my chronic invisible illness. Or a decent treatment.

I'm sorry about your illness. I feel this one too. A migraine treatment that actually worked fully would be nice.

Kamala Harris' presidency.

Yes, I know that only happens if we US folk ALL show up and get smarter about elections in general. But I've been watching highlights of the first night of the DNC and goddamn the energy is amazing and I think the Democrats have finally gotten a clue about how to talk about their accomplishments, and emphasize how important elections are.

On a side note, I got Panda Express for dinner. As soon as I finished watching the highlights, I opened the fortune cookie. Yes, I know fortune cookies are just like a lucky charm or making a wish upon a star, but I had to laugh at the message on the paper:

VISUALIZE THE WIN.

In the near future mom and I are going to an art museum on labor day.

In December, looking forward to hopefully winning the case for my client and getting him a green card.

Kamala, obviously. I'm actually hopeful about it.

In the more distant future, having a different job. Maybe my own place. In a dream world, someday working for a nonprofit.

A trip next month to the place where I want move.

Halloween party in October and this year we’ll have more people.

Visiting extended family for Thanksgiving and taking my dog this year. Last year was the first year I’ve been since I was 15 and it was such a great time!

Backpacking pretty much nonstop in the winter, mainly January and February when it’s actually winter here.

I'm going interstate with my mum to see a broadway show and it'll be nice to get away with her for a bit, just the two of us. After her health scare last year I don't want to miss any time with either of my parents.

Kamala Harris and Tim Walz winning the election. I'm also hoping for the House to flip and a bigger Dem margin in the Senate.

My Montreal visit is next month, and my boss has approved my time off for Christmas. I'll get two weeks to hang out with my dad (and maybe even mounts if they can make down south).

In no particular order:

1) a Harris Presidency
2) the release of the movie Transformers: One
3) a cure for a common nuisance level disease
4) a cure for a lethal disease

A friend got me into paddleboarding. These last weeks of summer are going to be filled with visits to lakes. I might be going solo Saturday but I just want to sit on my board and glide around water between breaks to sit on my board with my feet in the water ^_^

I also have karaoke night with a friend and some coworkers next weekend.

And then there's a cute tea shop my friends and I plan to visit in October. We're going to dress up as witches.

The only slightly solid plan I have longer term is that my family and I want to go to the 2026 Men's World Cup.

Service Day

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
My job wants to do a "service day" (non-mandatory) where we do some kind of charitable activity or community service thing.

Has anyone else had to do these types of things? How do you feel about them? Frankly I always feel like I just don't wanna but it seems like some people really like them.

Re: Service Day

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I have! They were voluntary at my old job and I always enjoyed them. It’s a lot of work to organize anything that makes an impact and no one ever wants to deal with individuals, so for me it was an opportunity to do something I couldn’t I do on my own. Alone I just do things like litter picking and trail maintenance on the hiking path by my house. But I like volunteer group work and the social aspect of it, despite not being very social in general.

Re: Service Day

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I already volunteer in my private time. If my boss asked me to give up some of my private time to do something to make the company look good, which is what these service days are-PR for the company-, my response would be "Fuck You, Pay Me!", and it better come out of my rota'd hours.

Re: Service Day

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and we got to take work time to do them (like 2 days a year paid volunteering time). Which I guess somebody didn't like because it's not available this year.

Re: Service Day

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
My company regularly has volunteer events throughout the year, and we've always been paid for them. It's nice to get away from my desk, and I get to visit parts of the metro area I don't see all that often.

Re: Service Day

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, and I enjoy them. My favorites are the food packing for families and the leaf raking for elders. I’m not fond of the soup kitchens.

Re: Service Day

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
My workplace encourages us to do charitable things by offering to match your donations (and office workers can use one work day to volunteer at a place of your choice too).
They also have a "Project Day" where employees spend about an hour doing a volunteer program they bring to our workplace. One year we built skateboards for kids. Another year we packed meals for local families.

I like the projects they bring to work (and I love to do things that aren't my work and get paid for it), but in general I have a rather cynical opinion on why my workplace creates and promotes these volunteer things.
