Well, it is social commentary (the band wrote on the CD it was on: The song 'Barbie Girl' is a social comment and was not created or approved by the makers of the doll.), but maybe not the one you were thinking of. Critics said the song "rants about the inherent misogyny of Barbie", "alludes to the secret, less-than-wholesome life of every little girl's fave doll", and "simultaneously sends up femininity and Barbie dolls". It was ruled a parody in court.
