seeing all this DS9 discourse that I didn't get 20 years ago as a wee fan, I think I know at last what my own beef with DS9 is. mind, I don't have much of one, I generally still like the series and my housemate has been re-binging it for the 12th time now that we own it.

my beef being, they were trying very hard to do justice to all the themes, and didn't fail, but there were too many themes to cover all at once. the genocidal bits with Bajor didn't actually overlap with the genocidal notions of the Dominion, but now you want to add racism (towards changelings, Klingons, etc), fascism (Cardassia), gender issues, family issues, war crimes, etc? the overarching concept needed serious editing of the "focus on one major theme please" variety. I will say that TNG did it smoothest, Voyager less so even though I generally enjoyed the characters of Voyager more, but DS9 suffers from having too many concurrent themes and no real easy focus.

Still love it tho and hardcore wish Avery Brooks would roll out to join the TNG actors on the con circuit, he's such an amazing actor.
