Is this a big thing fandom is doing? I've never seen it even from people who think "It was made by cishet white dudes" is a good way to criticize Western games they don't like.

I haven't personally seen people call Japanese creators "white guys", but I've seen them call many Japanese characters in anime "white guys" (e.g. Shinji Ikari) so I wouldn't be surprised if that problem extended to our side of the fourth wall as well.

... Admittedly, it's been years since I've seen even that. I thought people had gotten better about it, but maybe I've gotten better at filtering my dash.

DA
Oh, people still do it, just a bit more subtle. They just cry for more POC representation in anime and manga that are actually set in Japan and feature Japanese characters.

This is just a strawman. Oh, those pesky Western POC wanting more representation, they're so unhinged they even demand it of things from nonwhite majority countries!

It's not a strawman if it actually happens, hun. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. And it's more often than not white people whining, not western POC. I've been in several fandoms where -mainly American- people were making a stink about all the characters being "white" in Japanese school settings just because they were being fucking dumb. You either were lucky and never encountered it or are wilfully ignorant. But a strawman this is not.

What?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-28 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
This (along with calling the characters white) drives me so, so insane. Yes, the character (looks at notes) Akechi Goro, who is getting coffee at Yongen-Jaya inn this cutscene, is definitely white. I can't believe these people started doing it to REAL PEOPLE now too.

Oh you sweet summer child. Japanese characters from anime, manga and JRPGs have been called white for decades.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-28 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
See: all the people who call Sailor Moon white.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-28 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
What specifically is that even supposed to mean or criticise? I don't play FF but the Persona games seem pretty rooted in Japanese society?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-28 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
DA but I think it's basically some people using buzzwords like "cishet white male" as a shorthand for a certain type of criticism and they don't even notice or care if the description even fits. And then they go "oh it's more about the attitude than the actual fact whether they're really cishet white men" just like when calling everyone of any age group a boomer based on behaviour instead of actual age.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-28 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Grumbles. Bloody yanks and calling things and people white and nonwhite arbitrarily.
