Reminded of this by someone posting about Jack Black's acting yesterday - the Jumanji reboot hit all those targets for me.

I mean, considering how conservatives these days, at least in the US, talk about immigrants as an invading horde, all criminals, super dangerous, the metaphor actually doesn't surprise me.

I don't know. Depending on how hard it is to ignore the metaphors and how interesting you find the premise, those kinds of series can be kind of hilarious. Particularly when they inevitably go off script by having one (1) character be antiracist or gay or something and the conservative fanbase loses their collective mind over the author "turning woke".

Alixus, the character who's in literally one episode? There are plenty of one-episode villains who are men. And, similarly with Kai Winn and the female Changeling, there are plenty of recurring villains who are men. The idea that three female villains over a 7-season show is evidence of misogyny seems really strained to me. I'm not even sure I accept the premise that female villains can be evidence of misogyny in the first place, but this definitely doesn't seem like a situation where that would even apply.

I have to say this really seems like a take that comes from outer space.
