Annoying Ethical Dilemma

(Anonymous) 2024-08-28 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
So obviously. OBVIOUSLY there's ethical issues with AI art generation. I'm an artist. I should hate everything to do with it.
And i do mostly

But
I want to publish books far removed from my main name and persona.

Make a penname , actually hire artists for the book cover design and that jazz or make my own designs. But. Because i want to write filthy dark erotica nobody will link to me. I thought about using a realistic ai gen to make a fake persona for the penname picture name and everything. Or just find some way to realistically fake an author picture and just using an ai person pic is the only way i can think of

But yeah I'm conflicted

This is so dumb

Uh... do all books/author profiles have a picture of the author? I always thought that was just a "can but no must" thing. Especially in genres where authors want to stay anonymous, I don't really think having a picture is mandatory?

ah really

I mean I guess in a way my thought was just a picture as a misdirect idk but eh maybe that was a dumb idea to begin with

I think you're overthinking it? Like obviously you could use AI to do that, but it hardly seems necessary. You can think up a pen name yourself or use a name generator. A "persona" seems kind of... extra. Are you planning on having a big social media presence or something? And author pictures aren't really a major thing anymore, so it wouldn't be weird if you didn't have one. What WOULD be weird is if you had an AI generated pic - that would draw attention to the fact that you're a fake persona, which doesn't seem like what you'd want.

Well.now i feel like an idiot.
In my defense I've been recovering from illness so I haven't been sleeping

Nah, don't worry about it. God knows I've had my share of anxiety worries that sort of take up more real estate than they ought to.

FWIW, I have a friend who has written and published erotica (via small epublisher and self-pubbed via Amazon) and all she does is use a pen name. No big presence on social media, no author pics, just the book under a pen name. She also writes fiction and wanted to keep the two separate. I think these days people don't necessarily expect to know what an author looks like unless they're like Stephen King-level famous? So you're probably fine being anonymous.

Good luck with the writing/publishing!

Also, the fact that you're writing filthy erotica will probably clue people in that you're writing under a pen name and won't be high profile about your identity. It'll seem pretty rational to most people, so I don't think this level of subterfuge is really necessary.

In the planning stages, you could:

1) invent a pseudonym
2) design a set of pictures that go along with the pseudonym (author ID icon set, maybe a blog header or two to help advertise your stories, etc.)
3) Figure out likely publishing platforms, and how that would affect your previous design choices.

SA

4) See if there are any people who have published this kind of stuff before and ask them for advice.

I've never published smut before. If I were in your shoes, I would have to do some research into the matter to keep from overthinking everything.

Good luck!
