Can you explain for my very dumb friend if it matters whether or not a movie is a remake? They don't watch the Oscars.

I just think that a remake is much less effort in terms of script and direction. Sure, the work still has to get done but especially in cases where it's a pretty close remake, the real work on script and vision has already been done by someone else and you're just copying it.
Actors and crew should still be able to get Oscars for their efforts but basically coyping a movie should not get you a Best Picture award.

I think it'd run into the issue of the gray area where people will forever argue about how close is too close to qualify. And if reusing the same material disqualifies you, what about sequels and trilogies that have 100% of the same cast and characters, or movies based directly on books like LotR, and on and on...

I'm mainly talking about movies that are American remakes of foreign movies, like The Departed or more recently Speak no Evil. The ones where the directors actually freely admit that it's a US remake.
