Holdover from yesterday (more follow-up than news)

Someone wanted to know when Germany blocked the AO3 from Google search results. It's referenced on the AO3's wiki page, under the censorship section: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archive_of_Our_Own#Germany

I think I heard about that from TorrentFreak or the unofficial AO3 Reddit, here, https://www.reddit.com/r/AO3/comments/zsgt6v/is_ao3_blocked_from_being_displayed_in_google_in/

And the only reference I could find to its having been un-blocked, later, is here: https://netzpolitik.org/2023/bundeszentrale-jugendmedienschutz-archive-of-our-own-pruefstelle-muss-indizierung-von-fan-fiction-portal-zuruecknehmen/

Funny. Never noticed a thing lol.
I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if they decided on it but never managed to implement it, German bureaucracy/bureaucrats are notoriously digitally illiterate.

DA
German users on my tumblr had it blocked for some time
(they were also very strict about not using any vpn and not going to AO3 and I was weirded out by that so I remember)

AYRT

I asked some friends in Germany about this, I think in 2022, and they were baffled to notice that the AO3 wasn't available from a Google search anymore. However, they hadn't noticed anything before I linked them to articles claiming this was happening: they were longtime users of the AO3, and didn't need any search engine's help to discover the website. After poking the Google search, though, they confirmed that is was indeed blocked and there was a little blurb at the bottom of their search page mentioning that [I'm paraphrasing in English] 'some search results have been omitted'. There's information about what was done and for how long online - the links above have some of the details. I just commented on it here because I figured this is stuff other F!S users might care about.

I mean, I guess I was lucky then because it was working for me the few times I used google to find something in the last few years /shrug

AO3 has not been working for me recently and I'm not in Germany

You may need to clear your cache, maybe even a couple of times. I had a hell of a time trying to get it to take my password.

They've been having some server issues. It's been going up and down the last few days.

I haven't been having similar issues with anything else.
