Re: What makes you kind of side eye an author

Male writer doing a story with a male main character where the central narrative arc of the character's story is him trying to atone for and mature from past romantic misbehavior, with lots of writing about how bad and shitty the guy has been and how guilty he feels about it.

I think from now on, this is gonna be a straight-out red flag to me.

Is this about Rurouni Kenshin?

Ha, no, I never watched it.

The immediate top-of-mind example was Gaiman but I definitely don't think that he's the only example.

I feel like this applies to Shadow in American Gods (the book, never seen the show) but I can't think of any other Gaiman examples of this sort of thing?

Sandman

That's literally the plot of Sandman

I will admit I have never read Sandman but I didn't know that from pop culture osmosis.

Yeah, it's a little weird because Sandman doesn't necessarily explicitly lay out that that's what's going on, and it leaves a lot of it kinda in the background, but that is very much the plot. The basic overarching narrative of the comic is that Morpheus realizes that he has been unspeakably shitty to his past romantic partners, he tries to come to terms with that, and then decides he can't do it so he arranges his own death and rebirth.

The author of Rurouni Kenshin was found in possession of CSAM.

So what does that have to do with this discussion?
