He has-- maybe more like *had*-- a certain charisma or persuasiveness that made it sound like he knew what he was talking about. I remember a quote from a programmer who thought he was quite brilliant about electric cars, but when he started talking about coding he realized Musk was a bullshitter and started reevaluating his claims about electric cars...

I know I thought he was reasonably clever (having not known about his involvement with PayPal at the time) but when he started slinging accusations of pedophilia at people pointing out flaws in his rescue submarine idea that went out the window fast.
