OMG, I feel yah. One BNF in an old fandom was CONVINCED that she was the "fiktionkin" of one of the main characters of the show. And people were CATERING to her. Asking her what "really happened" after the end of the show. Lapping it up when she told them that later films were "not actually IRL canon" because she "knew" the character had "actually died after the stuff on the show, so nothing when he's older is real." And I figured, let her be crazy. But she'd comment on EVERYTHING ANYBODY EVER POSTED about how it either was/was not something she "remembered". And when I dared to say that I didn't believe that a fictional character could be "reborn" in a teanage girl's body and that JUST MAYBE we should all do fanfic however we wanted and JUST MAYBE canon stuff should be still labelled "canon" regardles of wher she "remembered" it... yeah, I was the one that hadda leave.

The real “fun” happens when folks from the same story meet: https://lb-lee.dreamwidth.org/1039108.html

(Please no harassing the authors; they’re cool.)

Wow... that was quite a bit to process :/ Takes all sorts, I suppose.

In my experience, what you need is to locate one or two other (stubborn) fans who also got tired of it, and carry on together as if that person's pronouncements don't matter. They will either adjust to not everyone professing belief in their pet delusion, or make enough of a mean-spirited fool of themselves to scare off a lot of the people who believed it was cute or harmless to humor them, before.

If you really think the 'kin you're interacting with is dangerous-crazy, you might want to employ a VPN, or just TOR, to make yourselves harder to swat. But it can be rather rewarding to hold your ground. One person self-appointing as the arbiter of the whole canon and the judge of all associated fanfiction ... is basically begging for someone to take them down.

Oof, my experience was at least not THAT bad, but I did have to just quietly bow out of the fandom space that this one guy was active in bc the combination of fictionkin and lack of media literacy was such a potent cocktail of 'claiming the most random things to be REAL' and like... I don't like to tell people how to live their lives, but it got to the point where interacting with that person would just give me the creeps and I didn't want to stick around to see what came next with them.
