Oh god, I feel this. Worst is when someone makes a mix and they decide to put multiple albums worth of music from one artist on it. Your mix does not need to be 76 songs long with 25 songs by Mitski Dx (And then 15 by Mother Mother. And another 12 by Will Wood...)

(also no shade to these bands, I do like them, but. There's a limit!)

*checks my OTP playlist*

OK, so there's ONE Taylor Swift song, but that's all and I think that's forgivable.

I love finding songs that apply to a ship, regardless of the decade or genre. Even if I don't care about the ship itself! It's just fun. I'm not a fan of when people try to force a song just because they so badly want it to fit a ship. Also, some songs are far too... broad in meaning? That I feel it doesn't do anything for the ship at all.

Of course, I'm also guilty of thinking "yeah, this section of song is enough" even if other parts of the song don't quite gel or just outright contradict a ship.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-12 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there's always going to be an element of people just saying "I don't care, I just fucking love this song" and honestly that's fine. It just has to be kept at reasonable levels. It's an art, not a science.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-12 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I've done playlists and I don't even like Taylor Swift's music (and I've never even heard of those other guys)!

(Anonymous) 2024-09-12 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I have a playlist for one of my favorite ships that doesn't have any of those artists on there. Mine is chock full of older music.

I have definitely seen playlists in my fandom that do have those artists, though. Or at least, I know Swift and Mitski are on them - I've not heard of the other two listed in this secret and I don't recall ever seeing them pop up in my fandom. I do agree with this secret, though, yeah, it does feel sometimes like people are focusing more on whatever the hot artist of the moment is rather than what songs might actually fit the ship in question.

But even then, I still like seeing people's playlists anyway, if for no other reason than it can be a fun way to discover new (or new to me, anyway) music.

This is a fun secret for me because I was really into fan mixes several years ago, and it's fun to see that some of the main music choices have changed but some are the same (Mother Mother was on every playlist a decade ago too). I've noticed that certain songs or artists would get very popular for awhile and used on almost every mix. People definitely approach mixes with different levels of seriousness and curation, some just putting songs they like and vaguely associate with the characters, some trying to tell a clear story, and everything between. I prefer more curated mixes but mine definitely are biased towards my own favorite artists and the popular artists I connect to the most too.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-12 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly this is why I can't just look up other people's ship playlists! There are a lot of popular songs that I see over and over again no matter what ship I'm looking up and it never feels right for the characters.

I mean, I love making my own playlists anyway, but every time I think 'oh, maybe someone will have thought of an interesting song I didn't think of', I find... the same five popular artists, the same few songs that DON'T make me think of the ship in question.

I see this less in my fandom, but my fandom in general tends to lean towards more eclectic music in mixes.

yes yes the special tolkien fandom we've all seen it

Kind of like every one of those lists had a Snow Patrol or Bright Eyes song. I still don't know who the fuck Snow Patrol are.

Huh, I really like Taylor Swift’s music, but I don’t have a single one of her songs on any of my ship playlists. I don’t know who any of these artists are, but I generally pick songs based on vibes (the lyrics don’t always have to match the ship). If a friend also has the same ship, I ask them for song recs too.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-13 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a big Taylor Swift fan, and while her songs tend to make it onto the big, messy, extended ship playlists I make just for myself, she rarely makes it onto any of my more heavily curated fanmix-length playlists. Her vibes are just wrong for my ships, most of the time.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
It used to be Florence + the Machine, Mumford and Sons and Adele (two songs only), and before that it was Evanescence and Linkin Park!

If 'Achilles Come Down' being on every playlist gets more people to listen to Gang of Youths in general, I'm for it (I say as someone who got into GoY after hearing ACD on Spotify randomly one day).

Absolutely my biggest pet peeve and why I almost exclusively listen to my own ship fanmixes, lmao. No, Two Birds by Regina Spektor does not fit every ship even if it is a great song...

(Anonymous) 2024-09-13 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
This is one of those irregular verbs in fandom, I think. I'M making a playlist that fits the vibes of the ship; YOU'RE reusing the same cliche songs and artists everyone else does.

(Although, IMO, if you have more than one song by a given artist on your playlist, that's not on.)

The playlist sounds like shit.
Is the ship shit? IDK, I can't figure it out!

(Anonymous) 2024-09-13 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
You'd prefer they go back to all being Celine Dion and Shania Twain like in the old days then?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-13 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I noticed a lot of fics had a lot of the same songs in their fanfic playlists and I just assumed it was because I was in a particular fandom...but maybe everyone's tastes in general are a bit generic?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-13 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
I've never heard of a couple of these, but if I made a fanmix (ship playlist or not), it would be sooo basic.

Like for Teen Wolf:
Hungry like the Wolf - Duran Duran (director of the video has directed on the show)
She Wolf - Shakira (because of Stiles in the first ep)
Maneater - Hall and Oats (so, so many characters)
Shot Through the Heart - Bon Jovi (or, you know, shot through the arm or whatever)
Bad Moon Rising - Creedence Clearwater Revival (pretty self-explanatory)
Can't Fight the Moonlight - LeAnn Rimes (this one, too)
My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark (Light Em Up) - Fall Out Boy (fire)
Mouth - Bush ('Nothing hurts like your mouth' is relevant in so many ways)
Li'l Red Riding Hood - Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs (well, red hoodie anyway)
Another One Bites the Dust - Queen (turnover on this show was high)
Monster - Imagine Dragons (another self-explanatory one)
What Does the Fox Say - Ylvis (because kitsune and nogitsune)
The Kids Aren't Alright - The Offspring (more for the title and the overall feeling)
No One Lives Forever - Oingo Boingo ('Let's have a party, there's a full moon in the sky; It's the hour of the wolf, and I don't wanna die')
Stayin' Alive - The Bee Gees (because it's funny in reference)

When I was into doing fanmixes I was absolutely researching the hell out of music to match character(s).
My pet peeve people in my country using music in our language for foreign fandoms. I am sorry, but this 90s pop band we were listening in school absolutely doesn't match this American hero or anime girl unless it's a joke.

That sounds annoying

(Anonymous) 2024-09-13 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't been in the playlist circles for ages, but I remember there being some really good ones for Captain America with some really fun 40s music in there.

I always thought a good character or ship playlist was a real work of art. I am not great at that kind of thing and I was always impressed with the variety and ability to find music that really did speak of the character. I would definitely be annoyed if they were just the same same same. Also sounds more like "I love this character/ship and I love this music, so that means this playlist is for this character/ship"
