"Hero is born special" is a time-honored trope, and while it can get old, connecting it to eugenics sounds like you're one of those fans digging for a grave moral reason to criticize a particular piece of media you don't like because you're not comfortable with it being okay to just not like something. You could have just talked about Naruto's specialness undermining the hard work moral without bringing in eugenics. That would be normal and valid.

DA
And they are doing it at Japanese author too. So if we are reaching it's interesting reflection why OP connected Japanese and eugenics

Oh fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-13 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, now YOU'RE doing it.

I just couldn't help myself, it was such a low-hanging fruit :D

Okay but Naruto isn't just Born Special, he's Super Special and descended from the Super Special Moon People who are like gods. Like, he's basically got the Most Special Pedigree Ever, in a world of special pedigrees. I can see why OP commented on eugenics here.

And Luke Skywalker is the son of Anakin Skywalker, the Most Special Jedi to Ever Exist, in a galaxy of special people, so does that make George Lucas a eugenicist?

I didn't read Naruto, so I don't have context but AYRT made it sound as if Naruto is specifically descended from a race of very special, super powerful people that may or may not have been considered gods (not sure if that part is hyperbole) rather than just the kid of one dude who was essentially the Mozart of his craft.

Unless the Skywalkers are of a different race which has superior Force control, I don't think this is an equivalent comparison (though they might, I haven't seen Star Wars either).

A character being descended from a super powerful race is also a very old and common trope that has nothing to do with eugenics.

Yes.

The retcon of Rey's lineage sure did.

Luke Skywalker is not literally descended from an ancient godlike race that is superior in every way to normal humans, and that's why he's super special.
