JAPAN. omg. It was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime, we spent so much money on 3 weeks seeing the top historical locations for our interests, and then we came home to find out we may be able to afford to go again sometime soon. We came back with a new love of sumo and a list of places to see and things to experience, even though both of us want to go to Ireland, Scotland, and Italy as well. Japan x2 first, apparently.

I was not expecting to love Osaka more than Tokyo. Osaka was so much fun, so laid back and cool compared to strict and unfriendly Tokyo. All the smaller cities were also wonderful - Kumamoto, Sendai, and Ueda were surprisingly fun, and more interesting than the Golden Route. Staying overnight on Miyajima was magical, seeing Itsukushimma lit up at night while a little old lady told her tour group the legendary tale of how the Taira clan built the shrine in 1100 CE was just...inncomperable, I have never experienced something so unexpectedly incredible. I want to see sumo live either in Osaka or Fukuoka but I'm leaning Osaka, even if we've already been there in spring. Koyo season in November would be nice also but Fukuoka doesn't really have fall colors until December, so it wouldn't really be during koyo season.
