I bet anything that if Sasuke had settled down in Sand or somewhere and told Naruto to leave him alone, Naruto would have respected that request. But Sasuke wasn't going off to live a quiet life; he was making enemies everywhere he went, and it caused blowback on the Leaf. So it was either twist Sasuke's arm or kill him. There wasn't a lot of in-between for Naruto to work with that let him ignore Sauce.
