I think it's possible for someone to find something good in works by people who turn out to be objectively awful, especially if they don't know that author or artist is an awful person. Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover novels helped me get through being a lonely, nerdy, autistic teenager. The work itself can be good even if the person who created it isn't.
