Questions

You've got questions -- someone's got answers!

aka I posted this on yesterday's thread today smh.

Anyway, how crazy/foolish is it to buy a wedding dress (that is on sale right now) when you don't even have a relationship yet?

I really would like to get this dress, but I also recognize how wild it sounds to go ahead and make an appointment to get fitted when lmao idk when's the wedding boo, you don't have anyone to marry yet.

Has anyone done this before? Questions, comments, concerns?

What does it look like? Could it be used for other occasions?

... IMO, it's a bit nuts, but I've never been one of those "dreamed about my wedding since I was a little girl" people. I don't like ceremonies, or dressing up. Without an actual partner, it feels really weird, like it's part of some vague fantasy that's supposed to be about romance, but is only about the (rather expensive!) accessories at this point.

But if you can afford it, go for it. If it's going to strain you financially, then maybe just content yourself with window shopping, eh? The Perfect Dress won't do a whole lot for you if something happens and you're short on rent money.

And on a purely judgy level, if I learned a friend or acquaintance of mine had bought a wedding dress with no actual fiance or wedding on the horizon, I'd assume they were super desperate to get married and weren't picky about their choice of groom. I'd never say anything to their face and I'd be polite, of course. But I'd kind of worry about their mental health and common sense.

I wouldn't pay money to get it fitted yet, at the very least.

Frankly yeaaaah, it's weird.
When/if you will get married for real there is a chance that you will have different body, or style or different type of wedding. Something can happen to your dress (moth, flood, moving houses whatever).
Is there a chance to find not a wedding dress in a style you want? You can fit pretty dress if it's something you are interested in

Sounds like FOMO to me, not a great strategy.

I would consider a) how noticeably is it a wedding dress and b) how much does it cost (relative to your finances)

If you could wear it as something other than a wedding dress that would be a plus, then you can get mileage out of the dress regardless of when/if you ever marry.

The more expensive the dress is to get for you, the more I wouldn't do it. If it's $500 and you make 100k a year with plenty of savings, sure, whatever, go for it. But if you have to dip into your savings to get it, I wouldn't do it.

As someone who doesn't ever plan to marry but loves fashion, I'd be interested if the dress was a design I loved and if I could imagine putting together outfits and looks for it rather easily with the clothing and accessories I already own.

As for if you are interested for it to be your actual wedding dress...well, I have heard stories about women who picked out their dream dress and stored it away because they bought the dress before even knowing if they'll even be wed soon. Not super out of the ordinary.

I suppose, ask yourself if you are buying the dress because you actually love the dress or are you buying it from a place of fear/insecurity/wishful thinking?

It's a bit unusual, but... I mean, if it's not hurting anyone (depriving a person of a dress they need), and not hurting you financially, I don't see the issue. Especially when you are going for a dress that is on sale anyway.

I remember years back there were a couple of ladies in the news who "married themselves" and got dressed up in the full ensemble, veil, dress, flowers, etc and even had photos taken. I don't see this as being much different than that.

Lots of people have weighed in on the financial side, so I won’t.

I had a friend who bought a wedding dress when a shop went out of business because she loved it. She stripped it down to the basic dress and dyed it her favorite color and wears it for fancy events. It looks nothing like a wedding dress now, more like a remodeled prom dress. She does look fabulous in it. Something like this is always an option.

Thank you everybody!

I do love the dress (definitely could wear for a ren fair situation), but it probably doesn't fit into my budget, realistically. The only real FOMO here is that a dress I like will no longer be in circulation, so to speak (they bring in new dresses, certain dresses are only available for a certain period, etc). There will be sample sales in the future.

Thank you, F!S :) I was a little Cuckoo bananas for a minute.
