Agreed. Very few times does a celebrity voice work.

Based on barely anything at all, I think if you're going to cast a celebrity either cast a comedian or an actor comfotable on a theatre stage. They're way more likely than a TV or movie star to have learned the knack of using their voice to engage an audience that can't necessarily see them.

Some actors without a background in VA training can do it surprisingly well.

Many actors from Game of Thrones will knock your socks off with their VO performances. Especially Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen, Daenerys's brother) has done absolutely mesmerizing voice work. Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark) is also very good at it. Neither of them has formal training, as far as I know.

There are some well-known actors who do both, like Mark Hamill. I also think at least part of it is that so much money gets put into animated theatrical movies that studios making them want to make as much money as they can, and name recognition can help with that.

Yeah, I think Robin Williams as the Genie is the root cause of this. He was fantastic but there was only one Robin Williams and they keep trying to make it work without him.

I mean, it is different, but don't a lot of voice actors come from other types of acting, maybe not usually 'big' actors, but still.

I watched Nolan North on Port Charles, watched Michael Rosenbaum on Smallville, watched Jason Marsden on Almost Home, watched Seth Green in Can't Buy Me Love, It, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Austin Powers, etc., and thought they were all good on screen, but now they do a lot voice work.

A lot of the voice work on Disney and Pixar animated films seems good to me and they have used some big names for that - Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, James Earl Jones, etc.

It's like any other acting part - some are good, some are okay, and some are bad.

Stunt-casting is really nothing new these days. Also, it's a specialized field and there are many VAs who also do other work. Loads of comedians are great at VA. I think it's a bit odd to generalize on this sort of thing.

YEAH, Passions! I was a Days fan but since they aired back to back, I caught my fair share of Passions episodes and will still sometimes randomly exclaim "We're DOOMED, Timmy!" and "Timmy and Tabby have hit the big time!"

I appreciate how bonkers-wacky that show was willing to get.

I can't remember being into Passions much, but I enjoyed recaps on The Soup or recaps from my friends who watched it. XD

I was a fan of Days of our Lives. There was another soap my sister and I were really into that had ended in the early 90s...Santa Babera I think!

Aw, yeah! I watched Passions until they stopped showing it in Australia (for rights reasons I think?) Before that I watched Days of our Lives when Marlena was possessed by the devil, and it felt like a natural move from that to Passions :P

I loved the scream, too! :D and his speed walk run thing was so good. I need to rewatch that episode. They were both really good at embodying their cartoon selves, I thought. (Mariner's squeaky hands on the table!)

Agreed. It's not a moral issue for me, it's that it makes me feel like I've stumbled into someone's (apparently-not-at-all-)secret stash of fetish kink porn.

Kind of like reading anything by GRRM. Like, you do you, dude, but I'd rather not feel like I can see the stains on the page while I'm reading it, you know?
