Every country I lived in has bordered the Pacific and put that in the centre of its maps, so it was really weird online to see so many maps that split up the Pacific (which is full of countries) rather than the Atlantic (which has a nice empty space right down the middle).

I'm from Australia. I know there's a South Pacific, I live in the South Pacific (kinda). I know that there are literally 100s, if not 1000s, of islands around us, but on a World map, were relegated to the bottom right corner with the Kiwis. It’s such a weird format for a not quite sphere to be depicted as

It's neat I guess, but do we know it was done deliberately and not just by chance because there was in fact no direction at all about how to hold them, and the kids just picked them up at random?
